A leading expert on interaction between the U.S. and Japan, he is a Professor of Sociology at Harvard University at Harvard University where he is the former Director of the East Asian Research Center and the Honorary Director of the Program on U.S.-Japan Relations at the Harvard Center for International Affairs. He is also the Clarence Dillon Professor of International Affairs, Harvard, and Newsweek has heralded him as one of the top 25 Asian hands.

Currently the Director of the Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy and Edward R. Murrow Professor of Press and Public Policy at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, he has recently interviewed all Presidential candidates on behalf of National Public Broadcasting Service. A former diplomatic correspondent for CBS News and network Bureau Chief in Moscow, Mr. Kalb also served in the State department at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.
