Vietnam and Afghanistan: Parallels between the Wars with Philip Bobbitt 

The inaugural event of the IGL's 25th anniversary celebration featured long time friend of the Institute and one of the nation’s leading constitutional theorists, Professor Philip Bobbitt.  Bobbitt first participated in an IGL event in February 1988 as a panelist in EPIIC's "Covert Action and Democracy" symposium.  Bobbitt is the Herbert Wechsler Professor of Federal Jurisprudence at Columbia Law School and a Distinguished Senior Lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin School of Law. His books include: Terror and Consent: The Wars for the Twenty-First Century; The Shield of Achilles: War, Peace and the Course of History; Tragic Choices (with Calabresi); and Democracy and Deterrence.  Bobbitt has served as the Associate Counsel to the President, the Counselor on International Law at the State Department, Legal Counsel to the Senate Iran-Contra Committee, and Director for Intelligence, Senior Director for Critical Infrastructure, and Senior Director for Strategic Planning on the National Security Council. He was an IGL Inspire Fellow in 2002-2003.

Questions without Answers: A Photographic Prism of World Events, 1985-2010

The Tufts’ Institute for Global Leadership, the Tufts University Art Gallery, and VII Photo Agency presented Questions without Answers, a major photography exhibition at the Tufts University Art Gallery from January 21 through April 4, 2010. Questions without Answers presented photographs from the renowned VII Photo Agency depicting defining events of the post-Cold War period and their aftermaths, from the Fall of the Berlin Wall and September 11, 2001, to Iraq and Afghanistan, The Balkans and Congo, Chechnya and Gaza, among others.  View the Questions without Answers micro-site.

The Prospects for Security and Political Reconciliation in Afghanistan: Local, National, and Regional Dimensions

The Tufts University Institute for Global Leadership (IGL), Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, and the Compton Foundation hosted a professional workshop on “Prospects for Security and Political Reconciliation in Afghanistan: Local, National, and Regional Dimensions.”  The workshop was two days of intense discussions among a select group of Afghan politicians and former military officials, Pakistani journalists and scholars, current and former United Nations officials, diplomats, humanitarian workers, and representatives from the U.S. military on the opportunities for, and obstacles to, security and political reconciliation in Afghanistan.

The workshop was initiated by the Institute for Global Leadership as part of its 2009-10 focus on “South Asia: Conflict, Culture, Complexity and Change” and was also part of the Institute’s 25th anniversary programming, with IGL alumni, Matan Chorev (EPIIC'04, NIMEP) and Jake Sherman (EPIIC'96) specifically chosen as the conveners.  Matan is the Executive Director for the Future of National Security Project at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, and Jake is the Associate Director for Peacekeeping and Security Sector Reform at the New York University Center on International Cooperation.  They both coauthored the final report: Prospects for Security; Political Reconciliation in Afghanistan, An HKS-Tufts Workshop Report.

A Symposium on Morality, Cognitive Science, and Policy

Over the past ten or fifteen years cognitive scientists have begun to address the status of morality within human cognition.  However, there has been little serious reflection on the potential impact of this trend of research on policy:  most people involved in policy are unacquainted with this work.  Moreover, most people studying the cognitive science of morality rarely think about policy, and when they do, it is as amateurs.  The aim of this symposium is to put these two camps in the same room and to begin a conversation between them. It is cosponsored by the Institute for Global Leadership and the Center for Cognitive Studies at Tufts.
