Egypt at a Crossroads: Discussion with Egyptian Activist Shima'a Helmy

November 9, 2011
Barnum 104 | 8:30pm11:00pm

A discussion with an Egyptian female online activist and participant of the Tahrir Square protests. We heard about this opportunity from a former Tufts student and IGL member, who is now interning with a film production company that made a documentary about four female activists during the protests. One of the activists, Shima'a, is coming to the U.S. to give a series of talks along with the two leaders of the production company..., who are both renowned writers and filmmakers.

At NIMEP we think that this is a great opportunity to learn firsthand from Shima'a about what happened in Tahrir Square. What roles did women have in the protests? What role did social media play in the protests? How does one become an active citizen in a repressive society? How can we help the people of Egypt as they struggle to transition to democracy and stability? All of these questions are relevant not only to NIMEP students, but to any student on campus that is interested in political activism, the Middle East, social media, and more.

Will be held at 8pm on Wednesday, November 9th, in Barnum 104.

Event is co-sponsored by the IR Department, The Peace and Justice Program, Tisch College, Leadership Studies Minor, Arab Students Association, and NIMEP.
