The Killing Fields

The winner of three Academy Awards, "The Killing Fields" is a riveting story of Cambodia's brutal Khmer Rouge Regime, told from the perspective of an American journalist. The film details his struggle to extricate himself from a country in crisis, and his reluctance to leave a Cambodian journalist and friend behind. Once out of the country, he devotes his energy to finding his friend, whose life is at stake because of his profession. Based on a true story.

Ulysses' Gaze

Theo Angelopoulos' film starring Harvey Keitel is the story of a filmmaker who returns to his homeland from a self-imposed exile in America. The problems in his village force him to set off in search of the truth of a historical dispute, contained on three cans of film deep in the war-torn former Yugoslavia.

Lone Star

John Sayles' portrayal of cultural collision in the American Southwest was nominated for "Best Original Screenplay" in 1996. The film follows Latinos struggling to change the history curriculum to reflect Anglo imperialism and destroy the myth of a noble "Manifest Destiny". At the same time, the town sheriff is trying to solve the mystery of a murder that happened thirty years ago.

The Suitors

A film portraying Iranians living in New York, "The Suitors" examines cultural differences, fears and prejudices. Iranians are engaged in their traditional wedding rituals when a SWAT team descends on them, called in by neighbors fearful of these "terrorists".

Safe Havens and Chronicle of a Genocide Foretold

These two films examine the ethnic conflicts in Bosnia and Rwanda, asking hard questions as to the origins of these bloody conflicts and examining the lack of action in preventing such human tragedies.
